 As a French artist in her fifties, her world is very feminine and unconventional. Cécile Plaisance studied economics and commerce, earning a DEA (research degree) at Paris Dauphine. She then worked in finance in the European markets for ten years. She then toured the world, ending up in the United States where she lived for eighteen months. She then worked with her husband in new technologies. Through all these years her camera was always with her, and she took a very large number of photos: places, faces, populations, unusual, ethnic objects… creating a personal bestiary of memories gleaned along the roads and seas she traversed. A photography has always fascinated her. She cites Helmut Newton as her absolute master, and refers to Barbara Kruger, Richard Avedon, Mel Ramos and Russell James as idols. However, Cécile soon allowed herself to be whisked away with a finance career, which left her with little time for photography. It was when she came to Brussels that she decided to devote herself to it, working with light. During her many travels she studied the nuances: the morning light in Senegal or in the Mediterranean, the midday light in Miami, or Madagascar; but also the lights on Broadway by night… To make fun of the derisory, she has created a series showing Barbie, a heroine who, in her view, is even more in the image of our time than ever. Like a journey through our imagination, except a little ‘left field’… |
